| Otothyropsis piribebuy, new species, is described from the río Piribebuy, a tributary to the río Paraguay basin, Cordillera, Paraguay. The new species is distinguished from O. marapoama mainly by having a continuous mid-dorsal series of 17-18 lateral plates, a robust levator crest in the hyomandibula, naked areas in the abdomen, an unpigmented circular blotch on the median portion of the lower lobe, and by several features related to sexual dimorphism. In addition, Otothyropsis is re-diagnosed and its phylogenetic relationships are discussed based on its present diversity. |

| ABSTRACT A new species of Parotocinclus, apparently endemic to the rio Jacuípe basin, Bahia State, Brazil, is described. The new species is distinguished from congeners, except P. bidentatus, P. cabessadecuia, P. dani, P. halbothi, P. muriaensis, P. pentakelis, P. seridoensis, and P. spilurus, by the presence of a reduced adipose fin. The new species differs from the aforementioned species by the absence of unicuspid accessory teeth, abdomen with broad naked areas between lateral and medial patches of plates, and snout tip completely covered by plates and odontodes. The adipose fin of the new species is restrict solely to the adipose-fin spine, lacking the adipose-fin membrane, a reduction pattern previously described to P. halbothi, a congener from rivers... |

| O besouro Alphitobius diaperinus spp (cascudinho) é visto como uma importante praga da avicultura mundial. Por suas características comportamentais e hábitos biológicos que dificultam seu controle, é considerado um vetor de agentes patogênicos. O objetivo desta pesquisa foi investigar o cascudinho como possível vetor de Clostridium perfringens em granjas avícolas industriais, localizadas em diferentes regiões do interior Paulista. Através de métodos bacteriológicos convencionais, em 40 amostras analisadas, foram encontradas contagens significativas de Clostridium perfringens em todas elas. A partir dos resultados obtidos, pôde-se demonstrar o potencial deste inseto como vetor do agente responsável pela enterite necrótica. |

| O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a eficiência de Beauveria bassiana (Bb), terra diatomácea (TD) e microrganismos eficazes (EM-4), associados ou não, no controle de Alphitobius diaperinus, e o efeito de EM-4 no desenvolvimento de B. bassiana. Os agentes de controle (Bb, TD e EM-4), em diferentes concentrações e combinações, foram aplicados em uma mistura de cama-de-frango e ração, em que os insetos foram acondicionados por dez dias. Avaliaram-se, in vitro: a germinação, as unidades formadoras de colônia (UFC), o crescimento vegetativo e a produtividade de conídios de Bb em contato com suspensão aquosa de EM-4 (1%) não filtrada e filtrada. | O crescimento da produção avícola provocado pela alta demanda do mercado acarreta um aumento da criação de aves em confinamento, o que resulta em um aumento da densidade das aves dentro do galpão. Em função disso, há um incremento da umidade da cama aviária, proveniente tanto das excretas das aves, como da água dos bebedouros, que favorece o crescimento de populações do coleóptero Alphitobius diaperinus, popularmente conhecido como cascudinho. | O objetivo deste trabalho foi avaliar a interferência dos métodos de bioensaios nos resultados de seleção de fungos entomopatogênicos, com a utilização de quatro isolados de Beauveria bassiana e adultos de Alphitobius diaperinus. Quanto à forma de inoculação, foram testados os seguintes métodos: imersão do inseto em suspensão de conídios; pulverização da suspensão sobre insetos; e tratamento de superfície com a suspensão em oito concentrações. | A new species of the hypoptopomatine catfish genus Otocinclus is described from two localities in the upper Río Amazonas basin: a tributary of the Río Puré in Colombia and two tributaries to the Río Amazonas near Iquitos in Peru. The new taxon can be easily distinguished from all congeners, except Otocinclus cocama, by having a single, intensely pigmented, vertical W-shaped caudal fin spot and by having three discrete dark bands on dorsum, between the dorsal-fin base and the caudal fin. | Parotocinclus arandai, new species of the hypoptopomatine catfish, is described from small creeks in the upper rios Jucuruçu and Buranhém basins, at the border of Brazilian States of Bahia and Minas Gerais. Parotocinclus arandai is distinguished from all congeners from the Atlantic coastal basins of southeastern and eastern Brazil, except Parotocinclus bahiensis, by having the branched rays and interradial membranes of the pectoral and pelvic fins unpigmented in ventral view. | Abstract Knowledge of the population fluctuation and spatial distribution of pests is fundamental for establishing an appropriate control method. The population fluctuation and spatial distribution of the Alphitobius diaperinus in a poultry house in Cascavel, in the state of Parana, Brazil, was studied between October, 2001 and October 2002. Larvae and adults of the lesser mealworm were sampled weekly using Arends tube traps (n = 22) for six consecutive flock grow-outs. The temperature of the litter and of the poultry house was measured at the same locations of the tube traps. | Otocinclus arnoldi from the La Plata basin is resurrected from the synonymy of O. flexilis described from the rio Jacuí drainage, based on three distinguishing features: the possession of five branched pectoral-fin rays, the larger number of enlarged odontodes on the tip of the parieto-supraoccipital posterior process, and having the prootic involved in the contact with the hyomandibular articular condyle. | Este trabalho teve por objetivo selecionar isolados de fungos entomopatogênicos, visando sua utilização no controle do cascudinho, Alphitobius diaperinus (Panzer). Larvas e adultos foram inoculados com suspensões de conídios de 99 isolados de Beauveria bassiana (Bals.) Vuill. e Metarhizium anisopliae (Metsch.) Sorok. em concentrações variáveis de 10(5) a 10(9) conídios/ml.
